Public transport in Medellin

Updated: Apr 15, 2020

Medellin is a city that has different transportation systems. When I studied there, at first I was nervous, since I was afraid of getting lost or that it was difficult for me to understand the best routes or that the prices were very high. But in this post, I will tell you about the different options you have and the estimated prices.

Subway It runs 34.5 km and has 27 stations. These stations are divided into line A and line B. Line A runs through the metropolitan area from north to south while Line B runs from the center to the west. He works 365 days a year from 4:00 to 23:00. The price is very accessible since a ticket costs 0.65 euros and with it, you can transfer from one line to another, as long as you do not leave the facilities.

Metrocable Medellin is the only city in the world where they use the metrocable as a transportation system.

This is an option for when you want to reach the parts of difficult access in the city. The best part of this is that some metrocable stations coincide with the metro stations and both can be used. The price of a trip by metrocable is 0.70 euros and it works from 4:30 to 23:00

Metroplus It runs 12.5 km and has 21 stations, one of which passes directly in front of the University of Medellin. They are very large trucks since they have a maximum capacity of 160 people. It has a cost of 0.70 euros and works from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Trolley car It is the newest transport and with fewer stops. Since it only has 3 stations. It has a price of 0.60 euros and works from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Buses This is a private transportation system, therefore it is not regulated by the government, generally, all trucks pass through the city center, but they do not have specific schedules and prices depend on how long the bus route is. The ticket pays directly to the driver. My advice if you are going to use the bus is always to bring the exact amount of money.

Taxis In Medellin you will always find taxis circulating around the city, this is a bit more option for, but without a doubt, it is the most comfortable and practical. Rates vary depending on the route you are going to take. But you can pay from 2 euros to 15.

Whether you are going to study or as a tourist, Medellin has many transport alternatives and they are all quite economical if when they are there, they are afraid of getting lost or do not know how to get somewhere, they can use the application called Mooveit, for me It helped a lot the first few weeks I was there.
