Do I need medical insurance to study in Colombia?

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

The government does not ask you for insurance for medical insurance when processing your student visa, but all universities ask you to have insurance for major medical expenses.

When I went to study in Medellin, my destination university gave me the option of contracting insurance with them, since they had an agreement with an insurer and it was cheaper to process it with them than directly with the insurer. At the time of buying insurance prices, I looked for it first with my insurance company in Mexico and the international medical insurance for 6 months it came out to me at approximately 350 euros and paying it directly with the university it came out at 189 euros and it is quite complete insurance since which includes up to funeral repatriation and dental expenses.

But if your university does not have the option of insurance, there are many very cheap insurers that meet all needs.

For example AXA has international insurance that paying 2 euros a day covers you for all the services you may need.

Mapfre also has international insurance focused on students, the good thing about this insurer is that it has agreements with different schools, which can make it a little cheaper.

My last advice is, take out health insurance even if your university does not ask for it. Everyone when contracting insurance does so with the intention of not occupying it, but they are always the best option, since not being in your country, medical services can be very expensive.
